Works in progress of The Ascension

A rough thumbnail is made first to get all the ideas together. A second sketch is done with better placement of the tentacles, the woman's pose and the general lighting. The perspective is distorted using Photoshop's transform tool, to make it look more dramatic. More and more distortion!
It's got to look right.
I cleaned up the figure and background, in hopes that it will simplify everything. But I think her expression is a bit vacant.. I changed her pose, I think she looks more mysterious now. The position of the tentacles are changed to look more balanced too. I used Adobe Illustrator's pen tool to trace over the background, now it looks more neat. The perspective is distorted even more and the bodies are added in, as well as other miscellaneous things I thought of. The general colors are added in. I decided to start with cyan because that's the first thing I think about underwater scenes and I wanted to start light. I added a warmer tone to the her skin and the background. The written notes were ideas that I was throwing around at the time and critiques I received. I always like to get the face right first before finishing the other parts of the painting. I also knocked back the lineart a little bit. The lineart is deleted completely and more details were added. I tried to keep everything soft and vague at the bottom but detailled at the top to keep her focused. I started work on the pillars and the tentacles. A lot of research was done on octopuses and their colors. Time to start work on the bodies. It was tough keeping them looking like corpses yet giving them color! I kept the bodies soft and ghosty, and added more designs on the pillars. i experimented with some frilly skirts on the bride. I added some bubbles, seaweed, and miscellaneous schools of fish to fill in the empty space. Some highlights were added to the corpses to give them more weight. A little bit of color adjustment was done using Photoshop. I think it looks a little too cyan though.. ..So with Photoshop, I played around with color adjustment and layers to get the right colors I wanted. I also widened the composition to give it more space.. and I think it looks more dramatic now.
Thanks for reading!

My favorite part of a painting is the face, and I
spend the most time focusing on the face when
I paint. It is most intriguing for me to study all
kinds of faces and expressions and to communicate
the subject's personality and character through the
style and media.
